Kujukuri beach

The name of this beach has an interesting origin. Kujukuri translates as 99 ri. And ri (里) is an old Chinese unit of measurement of distance, which is 600 meters in today's scale. When the map of this coast (XII-XIII centuries) was first created, the cartographer determined the length of the beach as 99 ri, i.e. about 60 km. If you want to relax on the beach, almost untouched by urbanization and preserving the local flavor and traditions, then Kujukuri Beach welcomes you. There are practically no glass skyscrapers and heavy reinforced concrete buildings nearby, but there are lovely fishing villages and vegetable farms here.

Beach description

It is a long sandy and flat beach that extends over 60 km. So, it hides a lot of nooks for romantics and those, who just want to relax alone away from the metropolis at the shore.

Similar beaches for Japan are uncommon, since most of them are rocky and uneven. Most of Kujukuri Beach is formed by small bays. The southern stream keeps the sea warm in November, which attracts many people who want to swim in the ocean after the end of the beach season. A strong wind creates ideal conditions for paragliding and kite launching.

The waves remain powerful and high even on the coast, because there are no rocks, reefs or breakwaters along the beach. That is why surfers, windsurfers and sub-surfers come here to practice new tricks.

You can get here by train via JR East. Get off at the Togane station. From there you can get to the beach by bus, which routes to Motosuka or Katakai.

If you rent a car or take a taxi, at the Togane intersection, exit onto the Chiba-Togane road, and then head along the Togane-Kudzukuri expressway to the village of Kudzukuri. The beach has a paid parking area, so you can leave the car here.

When is the best time to go?

If in the north of Japan, in Hokkaido, the weather in January-February is quite wintery, in the southern islands the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees even in the cold season. In summer, the rainy season comes in Japan, when the humidity becomes almost one hundred percent, and the thermometer is at 30 to 40 degrees.   Therefore, the best time to travel to Japan – is late spring or early autumn.

Infrastructure

The beach is mostly wild. You can walk for an hour and not meet a single soul or see a store. The busiest part of the coast is the small fishing town Kujukuri Machi, located in the center of the beach. There are a small fishing harbor, many good restaurants and many abandoned houses destroyed by the sea. However, they do not make the coast boring and dull, but rather add charm and comfort.

Here you can have a wonderful time doing a variety of sports such as surfing, windsurfing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, etc. This is the place where you can catch a great wave all year round.

The culinary feature of local restaurants are sardines (Iwashi), which are caught in front of vacationers right on the shore. They are sold both in fast food stalls and tents at the entrance to the beach, as well as in traditional Japanese restaurants. One of the hotels close to the beach is New Kanai with high-quality developed service.
