Shirahama beach

Shirahama is a picturesque beach located on the Izu peninsula. It combines a well-developed infrastructure and cleanliness with amazing landscapes and great cuisine. Thermal springs, an amusement park, Japanese casinos and numerous other attractions all operate nearby.

Beach description

Shirahama is a 800 m long beach located on the Izu peninsula. It's famous for the following features:

  • soft and white sand;
  • clean transparent water;
  • regular surfs;
  • smooth depth draft;
  • ideal waves for surfing.

The beach is surrounded by a thick forest, rocky mountains and slopes. It is perfect for walking, picnics, swimming and sunbathing. Surfing, windsurfing and diving enthusiasts all come here frequently.

The swimming season here starts in the middle of July. But you can encounter first swimmers as early as end of May. If the weather is good, you can swim here up until the end of September. The beach is popular among the Japanese due to:

  • its safety - a very small amount of crimes are documented here;
  • its cleanliness - the beach is cleaned twice a day which allows for barefoot walking;
  • its wide shore that can contain a large amount of visitors;
  • its fresh air;
  • and the people who come here - respectable and calm.

When is the best time to go?

If in the north of Japan, in Hokkaido, the weather in January-February is quite wintery, in the southern islands the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees even in the cold season. In summer, the rainy season comes in Japan, when the humidity becomes almost one hundred percent, and the thermometer is at 30 to 40 degrees.   Therefore, the best time to travel to Japan – is late spring or early autumn.

Useful information

The Shirahama Beach is located 4 km away from the Central Shimoda train station. You can get here by bus that goes from Izukyu to Shimoda or by car.

Open air saunas by the name of Saki-noyu Hot Spring are located 3 km to the south of the beach. These natural hot springs help you disperse your blood and calm your body. They cost 500 yen.
