Otaru beach

Otaru Beach, renowned as the premier destination for holidaymakers in Hokkaido, is affectionately dubbed 'Dream Beach' due to its vibrant party scene and popularity among Japanese students from neighboring universities. Situated a mere 15-minute journey from Sapporo Station, Otaru's allure is further enhanced by its well-developed infrastructure and the plethora of engaging activities available both at sea and along its picturesque shoreline.

Beach description

Otaru Beach, a beloved destination for beach holidays, captivates the youth - both Japanese locals and international tourists alike. This picturesque stretch boasts dark gray sands spanning approximately 1 km in length and reaching widths of up to 60 m.

  • The sea, while warm and pristine, lacks clarity.
  • Swimming is a delight from late June through August, marking Otaru Beach as having one of the longest bathing seasons in Hokkaido. During this peak period, the beach buzzes with activity, and securing a spot on the sand can be challenging unless you arrive early.
  • For those in pursuit of solitude and tranquility, Otaru Beach may not be the ideal retreat. The atmosphere is vibrant with constant merriment, and as dusk falls, the sky is set ablaze with a kaleidoscope of fireworks.
  • Summer brings with it a series of coastal parties, igniting the beach from sunset to sunrise every weekend.

Nestled on the outskirts of the beach is a concert venue, a hub for electrifying performances by renowned bands and celebrated DJs. Beach bars frequently post announcements detailing upcoming performances, keeping everyone informed about the exhilarating events at the beach concert venue.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Japan for a beach vacation is typically during the summer months, from late June to August. This period offers the warmest weather and the most sunshine, making it ideal for enjoying the country's beautiful beaches. However, there are a few things to consider when planning your trip:

  • Late June to July: This is the start of the beach season in Japan. The temperatures are warm, but it's also the start of the rainy season in many parts of the country. If you don't mind occasional showers, this can be a good time to go.
  • August: August is the peak of summer and is the hottest month. Beaches are very popular among both locals and tourists, so expect larger crowds. It's the best time for sun-seekers and those looking to participate in summer festivals.
  • Early September: The weather remains warm, but the crowds start to thin out as the school season begins. This can be a great time for those looking for a more relaxed beach experience.

Keep in mind that while the summer months are the best for a beach vacation, they are also the busiest. Booking accommodations in advance is highly recommended. Additionally, always check the local weather and sea conditions before planning your daily activities.
