Takahama beach

Takahama Beach is a very popular picturesque beach, located on the outskirts of Nagasaki Peninsula. The impressive rocky coast with incredibly white sand and beautiful views of the island of Hashima, combined with developed infrastructure, gave it the glory of one of the most famous beaches of the Goto Islands. Takahama is one of the hundred most picturesque beaches in Japan with the best conditions for swimming and spending beach holidays.

Beach description

Rocky shores in the emerald cut of pines and other vegetation, turquoise sea waters and the whitest sand among all Japanese beaches on the shore create a unique landscape along the entire length of the Takahama coastline of about 800 m.

  • The open coast has preserved its unique pristine beauty, and the local waters are particularly clean and transparent.
  • The beach is especially attractive due to the huge cliffs of "meioto-iwa" ("cliffs of the spouses"), as well as the unusual coastal cliffs that formed here 500 million years ago.
  • Relatively calm waters and a vast stretch of shallow water make this beach a popular destination for families with children.
  • From one side the coast is bounded and protected with a solid breakwater, and from another, by mountain Benten with the dense overgrown vegetation. This creates a safe environment not only for swimming, but also for SUP-surfing and SUP-yoga.

Takahama is one of the two beaches in this region of the country that is marked with the Asian Blue Flag. In summer, it is most crowded on the beach, and most vacationers usually come here in July or August.

When is the best time to go?

If in the north of Japan, in Hokkaido, the weather in January-February is quite wintery, in the southern islands the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees even in the cold season. In summer, the rainy season comes in Japan, when the humidity becomes almost one hundred percent, and the thermometer is at 30 to 40 degrees.   Therefore, the best time to travel to Japan – is late spring or early autumn.

Infrastructure

Access to the Takahama coast is free, but you will be charged for renting the beach arbors on the beach. Also, keep in mind that in high season you should book one at least a week before a trip to the beach. Paid showers and storage lockers are available on the shore.

  • You can enjoy local cuisine in the restaurant with a terrace, located near the coast. And equally delicious you can eat in a cozy pizzeria, located on the way from the parking lot to the beach.
  • Also, near the beach there is a cafe popular among vacationers, where you can have a tasty snack and drink coffee or refreshing drinks, while admiring the view of the sea and the distant island. Here you can order a takeaway or a ready-made barbecue package at the beach.

On the coast you can rent single and double kayaks. You can even choose a boat with a transparent bottom. Rental of all necessary barbecue equipment is also available. There is free parking area for up to 70 cars near the beach.

You can stay in a hotel in Takahama or at a more distant distance from the coast, in Nagasaki, where there is a wider selection of hotels. The nearest budget hotel (about 11 km from the beach) is I+Land Nagasaki.

Useful information

  1. The special appeal of Takahama Beach is its easy accessibility. The coast can be reached both by public transport (by city bus from the Nagasaki railway station to the stop with the name of the beach), or by taxi or rented car. Travel time is about 50 minutes by car and about an hour by bus. You can also easily get here from Kyoto, by train, reaching Wakasa-Wada Station, just a few minutes walking from the beach.
  2. From the coast of Takahama, you can admire the island of Hashima, which is also informally called "Gunkanjima" which means "Cruiser" and is associated with the similarity of its shape to a warship. Previously, coal mines were there, but with the exhaustion of coal resources, they were closed, and Hashima turned into an empty deserted ghost island with the ruins of concrete high-rises.
