Its total length is 1.2 km of a narrow light yellow, almost white sand strip.

Beach description

Unlike most beaches in Japan, crowded with thousands of people, Kikugahama is quite secluded and little known among tourists, it is officially open for swimming from mid-July to mid-August, the rest of the time there are too many jellyfish on the beach.

A beautiful sandy beach with evergreen trees is a favorite place for swimming in the summer and hiking at any time of the year. In summer, Kikugahama is lively but not crowded, people enjoy swimming and doing sea sports. Mount Shizuki plays the role of a natural breakwater and calms the waves, so the sea is calm and quiet. Also, Kikugahama offers stunning views of the sunset and small islands seen on the horizon.

The beach is located next to the beautiful historical landmark of Japan, the ruins of Hagi Castle, which are situated in the distance of 600 meters from Kikugahama at the foot of Shizuki Mountain.

When is the best time to go?

If in the north of Japan, in Hokkaido, the weather in January-February is quite wintery, in the southern islands the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees even in the cold season. In summer, the rainy season comes in Japan, when the humidity becomes almost one hundred percent, and the thermometer is at 30 to 40 degrees.   Therefore, the best time to travel to Japan – is late spring or early autumn.
