Kikugahama beach
Kikugahama Beach stands out as one of the most exquisite sandy expanses in Yamaguchi Prefecture, nestled on Honshu Island's coastline overlooking the Sea of Japan. Merely a brief bike ride from the heart of Hagi city, Kikugahama Beach is celebrated as one of the country's top 100 beaches. It boasts a 1.2 km stretch of fine, light yellow, almost white sand, creating a picturesque setting for a memorable beach vacation.

Beach description
Unlike most beaches in Japan, which are crowded with thousands of visitors, Kikugahama Beach offers a more secluded experience and remains relatively unknown among tourists. It is officially open for swimming from mid-July to mid-August. Outside of this period, the presence of jellyfish makes swimming less advisable.
The picturesque sandy shores, framed by evergreen trees, make Kikugahama a favored destination for summer swims and year-round hikes. During the summer months, the beach is vibrant yet comfortably uncrowded, inviting visitors to indulge in swimming and various sea sports. The serene waters, thanks to Mount Shizuki acting as a natural breakwater, provide a tranquil swimming environment. Additionally, Kikugahama boasts breathtaking sunset vistas and views of distant islets dotting the horizon.
Conveniently situated, the beach lies adjacent to one of Japan's beautiful historical landmarks - the ruins of Hagi Castle. These ruins are a mere 600 meters from Kikugahama, nestled at the base of Mount Shizuki.
When is the best time to go?
The best time to visit Japan for a beach vacation is typically during the summer months, from late June to August. This period offers the warmest weather and the most sunshine, making it ideal for enjoying the country's beautiful beaches. However, there are a few things to consider when planning your trip:
- Late June to July: This is the start of the beach season in Japan. The temperatures are warm, but it's also the start of the rainy season in many parts of the country. If you don't mind occasional showers, this can be a good time to go.
- August: August is the peak of summer and is the hottest month. Beaches are very popular among both locals and tourists, so expect larger crowds. It's the best time for sun-seekers and those looking to participate in summer festivals.
- Early September: The weather remains warm, but the crowds start to thin out as the school season begins. This can be a great time for those looking for a more relaxed beach experience.
Keep in mind that while the summer months are the best for a beach vacation, they are also the busiest. Booking accommodations in advance is highly recommended. Additionally, always check the local weather and sea conditions before planning your daily activities.
