Beach description

The Strogino Flood Plain Beach, nestled on the right bank of the capital in the Strogino area, is a gem within the Moskvoretsky Natural and Historical Park, spanning an impressive 13.2 km². This idyllic spot has won the hearts of Muscovites for several compelling reasons:

  • Pristine Environment: Boasting the cleanest air and water in the entire capital, the beach passed numerous sanitary inspections in 2016-2017. The local flora and fauna are a testament to its environmental purity, with over 300 species of plants and more than 30 unique species of fish and animals thriving here.
  • Impeccable Infrastructure: Since the commencement of development in 2015, the Strogino Flood Plain has seen a transformation. Visitors will find no trace of worn-out furniture, decrepit buildings, or crumbling roads. All facilities are brand new and meet modern urban standards.
  • Diverse Landscape: The beach's surface is blanketed with soft sand that emits a gentle crunch underfoot. A wooden deck, reminiscent of classic American boardwalks, lines the shore, followed by a paved promenade perfect for strolls, jogs, or leisurely walks with a stroller. This picturesque setting is further enhanced by the dense forest that envelops the Strogino Flood Plain from three sides.

The beach is characterized by a gradual increase in depth, the absence of currents, and a smooth, silt-covered bottom. Safety is paramount here, with medical and rescue teams inspecting the riverbed and embankment before each bathing season. They also conduct quarterly checks for dangerous parasites in the river waters. Additionally, multiple rescue teams vigilantly monitor the waters on motorboats and from stationary towers.

As a verdant oasis, the Strogino Flood Plain is a haven for swimmers, sun worshippers, joggers, and walkers. It's a place where people gather to grill shashlik, engage in outdoor sports, watch ships from the bay's shore, and enjoy skateboarding, cycling, or scootering. This locale is a melting pot of relaxation for young families, couples, hipsters, pensioners, and athletes from across Moscow.

The beach begins to bustle with activity from 8:30-9:00 AM and is particularly crowded on weekends. For those seeking tranquility amidst the beauty, the early morning or post-7 PM on weekdays is ideal. Despite the influx of visitors, the Strogino Flood Plain remains impeccably maintained, free of litter, damaged infrastructure, or congested spots. Law enforcement officials ensure the green zone's security through constant patrols.

Interesting Facts: The Strogino backwater is a man-made reservoir, excavated by Gulag prisoners during the construction of the Moscow-Volga Canal. In the late '60s, it was integrated into the city, quickly becoming a beloved retreat for the capital's residents, despite its initial lack of amenities. From 2005 to 2013, there were plans to transform the local coast into an entertainment beach with extensive infrastructure. However, residents from nearby areas opposed the large-scale development, successfully preserving the Strogino Flood Plain's status as a Green Zone.

When is the best time to visit?

When planning a beach vacation to Russia, timing is crucial to ensure the best experience. The optimal period for such a holiday is during the summer months, specifically from late June to early August. This is when the weather is most favorable, with warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours.

  • Late June to Early July: This time is ideal as the country celebrates the White Nights, especially in the northern areas like St. Petersburg, where the sun barely sets. Beaches near the Baltic Sea are particularly pleasant.
  • July: Considered the warmest month across Russia, July offers the best conditions for sunbathing and swimming, with the Black Sea resorts like Sochi being at their peak.
  • Early August: Still within the high season, early August provides excellent beach weather, though it's advisable to go before mid-August when the temperatures may start to decline.

It's important to note that while these months offer the best beach weather, they are also the busiest. For those seeking a quieter vacation, the shoulder months of May and September can still provide enjoyable weather, albeit slightly cooler, with fewer crowds.
